I am a professor of the practice in the English Department at Wake Forest University, where I teach journalism and writing and direct the Journalism Program. I came to teaching after more than 20 years as a working journalist, mostly at the Winston-Salem Journal, where I was a reporter, columnist and editor. I have always been drawn to human stories and to the role journalism plays in defining and creating community.
